As the technology market blooms, vehicle manufacturers are gaining access to advanced safety features and systems. More often than not these highly developed safety technologies are limited to luxury models and trim levels, but this is not the case with Toyota. Toyota is the first automaker that has committed to making advanced systems standard on almost every model and trim level sold in Canada. As stated by Cyril Dimitris, Toyota Canada Inc.'s Vice President, "[safety technologies] are so important that everybody deserves to benefit from them". In addition to offering these technologies to everyone, Toyota Canada and West Coast Toyota are committed to providing drivers with knowledge of how these technologies work, so that their full potential can be reached.

Toyota Safety Sense is a series of active safety technologies that aim to help mitigate collisions, help drivers stay in their lanes, and improve night driving safety. This safety technology comes in two packages, Toyota Safety Sense C and Toyota Safety Sense P, and will be offered on 2017 and 2018 models representing approximately 90 percent of expected sales in the coming year.

The Toyota Safety Sense C (TSS-C)

Toyota Safety Sense C is comprised of three active safety technologies, Pre-Collision System, Lane Departure Alert and Automatic High Beams. It features a camera and laser beam to help prevent or mitigate collisions and is included as standard safety equipment on the following models for 2017: Toyota Yaris Hatchback, Toyota Prius c and Toyota Corolla iM.

The Toyota Safety Sense P (TSS-P)

Toyota Safety Sense P includes four active safety technologies: Pre-Collision System with pedestrian detection, Dynamic Radar Cruise Control, Lane Departure Alert with Steering Assist, and Automatic High Beams. It consists of a camera and millimetre-wave radar for precise detection and awareness. This System is included as standard safety equipment on the following 2017 models: Toyota Corolla, Toyota Prius, Toyota Prius Prime, Toyota RAV4 and RAV4 Hybrid, Toyota Highlander and Highlander Hybrid.

Awareness and Education

Safety is greatly improved through advanced and innovative safety systems like Toyota Safety Sense, but for these systems to be successful, Canadians need to be given the information they need to understand how they work. Toyota Canada has launched an education campaign around Toyota Safety Sense to ensure that Canadians are given an opportunity to understand these safety systems in their entirety. This campaign includes:

  • Training Toyota Dealer staff through a series of training sessions across the country.
  • Education tools for Toyota owners to help them learn about the safety systems in their new vehicle prior to ownership
  • Dedicated events for automotive journalists and other media including demonstrations of the Pre-Collision System with vehicle and pedestrian detection, Dynamic Radar Cruise Control, and Lane Departure Alert with Steering Assist.
  • Toyota Safety System marketing strategies to help raise awareness of Toyota Safety Sense and the role that new technologies play in automobile safety through traditional and online media channels.
  • Interaction opportunities that allow Canadians to experience Toyota vehicles and their technologies first-hand.

Through this comprehensive awareness and education campaign, Toyota Canada has committed to having an honest conversation with Canadians about current and emerging safety technologies, for the benefit of all.

Pre-Collision System (PCS) and with Pedestrian Detection (TSS-P)

The advanced Pre-Collision System can detect the vehicle ahead and determines if there is a possibility of collision. In the case that a collision is possible, the system can provide audio and visual alerts as well as additional braking force using Brake Assist to assist the driver as they brake. If the driver does not brake within a set time and the possibility of a frontal collision with another vehicle is likely, this system can automatically apply the brakes to reduce speed by approximately 30 km. The Pre-Collision System included in the TSS-P package may also help to detect potential collisions with pedestrians. As the system detects a potential pedestrian based on size, profile, and motion and determines that the possibility of a frontal collision with a pedestrian is likely, it can prompt the driver to brake through audio and visual alerts as well as automatically apply the brakes when no driver action is taken.

Lane Departure Alert (TSS-C) with Steering Assist function (TSS-P)

Through Lane Departure Alert, the driver is provided with audio and visual alerts then it is determined that the vehicle is starting to unintentionally dirt out of the visible white and yellow lane markings, as detected by the in-vehicle camera. Vehicles fitted with TSS-P and with Electronic Power Steering also feature a Steering Assist function. In the case that this system detects the vehicle is about to drift out of the visibly marked lane, it can provide subtle corrective steering inputs to help the driver guide the vehicle back onto its path of intent.

Automatic High Beams (TSS-C and TSS-P)

Offering drivers a clear view for nighttime driving without distracting or blinding other drivers is the Automatic High Beams System. Through the use of an in-vehicle camera, this system can detect the headlights of oncoming vehicles as well along with the taillights of preceding vehicles, and can automatically switch between high and low beams as required.

Dynamic Radar Cruise Control (TSS-P)

Dynamic Radar Cruise Control is included with Toyota Safety Sense P and can deliver a similar function to conventional cruise control as it helps to maintain a pre-set speed. This system is also able to monitor vehicle-to-vehicle distance and maintains a pre-set distance behind a preceding vehicle by adjusting vehicle speed (within a set range).
